With its seventh straight victory in a 72-52 thrashing of Blinn, it's become Moor and Moor obvious that Grant McMillan's growing-and-going Bulldogs aren't just dashing to the end of a regular season.
Navarro got 41 points off the bench from sophomore Akol Mawein and freshman Jaylen Harrison, a fourth double-double of the season in a superhuman effort by Jules Moor and a team-high 43 rebounds against one of the league's top rebounding clubs. All the ingredients blended to give Navarro its seventh consecutive double-digit win and stifle coach Scott Schumacher's team on its lowest scoring output of the year -- 31 points below its average.
Navarro's streak may be under-the-radar compared with league-leading TVCC's 18-gamer, but it is still very real -- and growing toward hurricane intensity as it spins into April and the warmer waters of the Region XIV Tournament at Jacksonville. After churning their third win of 20 or more points during this stretch, the Bulldogs are averaging wins by 17.4 points.
Among the 10 on-floor contributors in Saturday's team effort, Mawein topped a cast of three double-figure scorers with 21. The University of Arkansas signee also grabbed nine defensive rebounds, blocked a shot and made a steal.
Enter Harrison, who added 20 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal in the effort. Saturday's was his fifth game of 20-plus during a nine-game run with a 16.2 average.
They are all working harder with more urgency in their effort -- but none like Moor.
The sophomore fashioned a 16-point, 10-rebound effort Saturday for a second double-double this week and team-high fourth of the year. Moor hit a tidy 7-of-10 shots from the floor, matched a personal-high game of six offensive boards, and dished out three assists. Moor is hitting 57 percent from the floor in his last eight games (45-of-79), and a blazing 13-of-18 in two games this week.
Blinn, entering the game with norms of 83 points and 43 rebounds, trailed 35-25 at halftime. Three minutes into the second half, they had pulled within 36-32, but Brian Washington's steal turned into his tap-in score. Leading 49-41 with 11:38 to go, the 'Dawgs went an 11-point run juiced by Moor's two offensive putbacks and a Mawein hook.
Navarro's lead ballooned to 24 on two occasions inside the final three minutes.
The Buccaners managed only 18 field goals and got a team-high eight points apiece from Braelon Seals, Tyler Washington, Bonke Maring and conference-leading scorer Davion Coleman.
Navarro (13-5) travels Wednesday to Victoria for a game against David Graves' Pirates before returning Saturday for their final regular-season home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
