Akol Mawein's game-high 19 points led three Bulldogs in double-figure scoring as Navarro used a 28-4 rampage during a 52-point second half to defeat Coastal Bend, 90-65, Wednesday night.
Freshmen guards
Jaylen Harrison and
Antonee Abraham also hit twin figures in Navarro's Region XIV conference season-opening win that featured point-production from 12 of the 14 players suited up. Harrison had 12; Abraham, 11.
The 6-foot-9 Mawein's 19 points came from 8-of-9 shooting from the floor that included two three-pointers during the second half. Mawein also cleared six defensive rebounds for NC.
Navarro pounced to an 8-2 lead three minutes deep, but CBC wrestled momentum away and claimed as much as a seven-point lead (35-28 at 3:41) over the 'Dawgs, thanks to nine successful three-pointers that only managed to create a 39-38 halftime lead.
Abraham and Mawein canned Navarro's first three-pointers of the game at the outset of the second half, and the Bulldogs started swinging the momentum.
Leading 48-45, Navarro went on a 28-4 sprint and opened a 76-49 lead with 5:57 to play.
NC travels to Carthage for a 4 pm Saturday game against Panola.
