Perhaps it was baseball's equivalent of early release for spring break.
Navarro's Bulldogs swept their three-game weekend series with Bossier Parish and made short work of the Cavaliers, reducing 25 or more innings to 19. Coach Matt Podjenski's Bulldogs (11-4/6-1) run-ruled BPCC in all three contests -- the most recent: Saturday's doubleheader, 10-0, in five innings, and 14-6 in seven. The 'Dogs, now sporting a four-game winning streak, will realize a breather of a break before Thursday when their next conference weekend series begins on the road against the Paris Dragons at Hub Hollis Field.
The Bulldogs renewed their blistering attack on BPCC pitching Saturday, hitting .418 (23-of-55) during the short-cut doubleheader, with five home runs among a total of 13 extra-base hits in their 12-inning afternoon.
After going 7-for-9 at the plate against BPCC, freshman Zac Vooletich extended his hitting streak to seven games and 13 of the 15 the Bulldogs have played. He leads the Bulldogs in nine categories: at-bats (60), hits (27), singles (15), doubles (6), triples (3), runs-batted-in (21), run scored (26), batting average (.450) and slugging percentage (.800). He's second in home runs with Cash Rugely (3) and second to Rugely in OPS (1.307).
After outscoring BPCC 32-6, Navarro now is scoring 11 runs per outing as 10 players brandish .300 batting averages or above.
GAME 1: Navarro 10, BPCC 0 (5)
Cash Rugely knocked in four runs, including a three-run homer during a six-run third inning that powered NC to victory behind startering pitcher Jake Combs (4-0).
Combs cruised through five innings with a two-hit shutout.
Logan Letney knocked in Navarro's first two runs with a single after the Bulldogs opened the game with consecutive walks to Rugely, Vooletich and Vergara to load the bases behind BPCC starter Justin Lawson.
With Navarro leading 8-0 in the fourth, Cal Stark's double to left plated Letney, who walked.
Back-to-back, fifth-inning triples by Tallon Heine and Rugely produced Navarro's final run.
GAME 2: Navarro 14, BPCC 6 (7)
Home runs fron Vooletich, Heine, Alex Vergara and Chad Ricker triggered a 14-hit attack highlighted by eight extra-bse hits in the nightcap.
Vooletich, who went 3-for-4 in the game, homered during a five-run first inning. Ricker, who also homered in the first, drove in a team-high four runs. Vergara blasted one in the second and Heine added another roundtripper during the fifth.
The Bulldogs created a 10-1 lead after three innings. Righthander Seth Foster, in relief of starter Riley Bauman, got credit for the pitching victory. AJ Ozorio-Brace came on to throw three strikes and recorded the final out.
