Box Score 2 Navarro Baseball (22-11) hits the road for seven of its final 10 regularly scheduled games, including a weekend conference series that begins Thursday at Bossier, La., against the Cavaliers.
Weather permitting, the teams are set to play a nine-inning single game at 3 pm Thursday, and a 1 pm Friday doubleheader.
The 19th-ranked Bulldogs have won four of their last six games.
Navarro and Northeast Texas doubled up in order to make up and catch up, and again succeeded in the skillful art of dodging randrops and lightning bolts. With doubleheaders Friday in Corsicana and Saturday in Mount Pleasant, the 'Dogs won three of four games and took the regular-season series from the Eagles.
The Bulldogs solidified their East Zone lead by sweeping Northeast 5-2 and 10-5 at Perry D. Graham Field on Friday, and gained a split Saturday with a resounding 17-5 seven-inning nightcap victory following a 9-5 first-game loss.
Saturday: Game 2 -- Navarro 17-5 (7 innings)
Leftfielder Alex Vergara homered and drove in five runs, while second baseman Austin Thorp helted his first home run -- a three-run shot.
Navarro used a 16-hit attack and scored in every inning to end the nightcap early.
Reliever Logan Letney, with 3.1 innings of four-hit work plus six strikeouts, secured his first pitching victory.
Cash Rugely, Zac Vooletich and Vergara, creating the upper third of the Bulldog batting order, went a combined 9-for-12 at the plate with four walks, scored nine runs and knocked in six. Rugely was 4-for-6 and tallied four runs. Vooletich went 2-for-2, walked three times and scored three runs.
Saturday: Game 1 -- Northeast, 9-5
The Eagles salvaged their only win of the weekend as second baseman Sawyre Thornhill hit two home runs to lead a 12-hit effort against starter Cooper Randall and reliever AJ Ozorio-Brace. Randall worked four innings and absorbed his first pitching loss of the season (5-1).
Cal Stark homered for NC, while Rugely went 3-for-3 with two doubles, scored twice and knocked in a run for the Bulldogs.
Friday: Game 2 -- Navarro, 10-5
Navarro completed a Friday sweep as Stark homered and knocked in five runs. Unbeaten starter Jake Combs went 6.2 innings and claimed his sixth win.
Rugely went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored three runs for NC. Vooletich knocked in two runs and scored twice.
Friday: Game 1 -- Navarro, 5-2
Letney homered and Ethan Ruiz knocked in two runs as the Bulldogs won behind starter Chad Ricker (2-2). Austin Ream picked up his first save.
Leading 3-2, the Bulldogs tacked on a pair of sixth-inning insurance runs.
