Deeanna Williams-King led an all-freshman Navarro Softball team that experienced landmark ‘firsts’ like few others during the program’s two-year infancy.
Williams-King, an outfielder from Irving Nimitz High School, drove in a team-high 58 runs, with 64 hits during a 51-7 conference-winning debut season and a berth in the Region XIV Tournament finals.
Deeanna and her teammates committed to return for more – and they earned a berth in the 2000 NJCAA National Tournament. The left-handed hitter, Williams, batted .376 and led the team in doubles (12), home runs (7), and RBIs (38), while successfully stealing 15 of 17 bases.
She transferred to the University of Texas where she earned All-Big XII honors. She lettered in both the 2001 and 2002 seasons. The 2002 Longhorns became the first of four UT softball teams to win 50 or more games in a single season in program history. UT (50-13) won Big XII regular season and tournament championships enroute to the NCAA regional tournament semifinals and the No. 16 ranking in the coaches’ poll.
